Lovells Island is granted to Charlestown.

October 28, 1636

Named for Capt. William Lovell of Dorchester, the island is granted to Charlestown by the General Court, “provided they imploy it for fishing by their own townesmen, or hinder not others.” Half the profits from timber cutting are directed to support the fort on Castle Island. Lovell Island is granted to Hull in 1654, purchased by Elisha Leavitt in 1767, and by the city of Boston in 1828, and the Massachusetts Humane Society subsequently builds the first “hut of refuge” in the U.S. on the island. The island is taken over by the federal government for military use in 1825, and garrisoned during the Civil War, World War I, and World War II. It is purchased by the state in 1958.
